NY SAME SEX MARRIAGE - WEDDING INDUSTRY NEWS
With the expected rise in marriages in New York with the passing of the same sex marriage law, it's logical to assume there will be an increase in revenue for wedding industry professionals. It is anticipated that there will be a spike in tourists traveling to the New York to have their love recognized and get married.
New York City has launched a campaign, "NYC I Do", to encourage same-sex couples to tie the knot. It is estimated that approximately $311 million of additional revenue will be generated with the passing of this new law.
Whether or not you agree, New York has now become part of history! See link for the entire story: http://bit.ly/mfzY36
Are you a wedding professional in New York? How do you feel the passing of this law will affect your business? Please feel free to leave your comments.

MY FAVORITE ENGAGEMENT SESSION LOCATIONS IN NYC
It is officially Spring, and wedding season is upon us! This also means that couples are scheduling their Engagement Sessions. The most important thing that I advise my clients of is that their location should reflect their personalities, and be of some significance to them, as a couple. Your E-Session should be uniquely yours. Are you an urban couple...or do you prefer the country? Do you enjoy hiking, or do you spend your weekends taking in the sights...afterwards, enjoying coffee/drinks at your favorite coffee shop or restaurant?
Choosing a location that is special to the two of you, will have you more relaxed, and the photos will reflect this, along with your enthusiasm, and love for one another! Whether you like vintage-inspired, a specific movie theme, camping, picnics, or the beach, simply ask your photographer to incorporate props, which have special meaning, as part of your session.
Although I can recommend many places in and around New York City, below are my favorites, in no particular order:

Whether you like vintage-inspired, a specific movie theme, camping, picnics, or the beach, simply ask your photographer to incorporate props, which have special meaning, as part of your session.
Although I can recommend many places in and around New York City, below are my favorites, in no particular order:
1. Central Park :: Considered the “Oasis” of NY, this location is so vast, that it encompasses 834 acres, and stretches for 51 blocks! There are so many features, and wonderful locations within the park to have your session, i.e., Belvedere Castle; Bethesda Fountain; Bethesda Terrace; Bow Bridge; Carousel; Great Lawn; Ramble, which has winding paths through lush greenery and woods; Zoo & Wildlife Center, and of course, there’s always the carriage rides. Central Park is one of my favorite places to photograph, and I often go there just to hangout, with camera in hand. I love to shoot the hustle & bustle of the people going about their day. It’s a wonderful way to spend a beautiful day in NY!
2. Times Square :: Where do you go when you want to have it all? Times Square! Located in the heart of NYC…the city that never sleeps. If you want edginess, with the urban streets as your backdrop, this is the place! And after your session, you can indulge in your choice of unending eateries, shopping, and entertainment. Need I say more?
3. Grand Central Terminal :: Referred to by many as Grand Central Station, if you’ve never experienced this location…it’s a MUST! Watch as thousands of people traverse this location as they make their way to varying destinations. As a previous “9 to 5”er, I worked at a CPA firm located 2.5 blocks from Grand Central. This terminal is not for the faint of heart…you could literally get pushed aside by people scurrying to get from point A to point B. I LOVE it! Here, you can take advantage of numerous iconic locations, such as the huge marble clock on the main concourse level, the sky ceiling, and grand staircases. There are also boutique shops and great eateries to discover after your session.
4. Brooklyn Bridge :: You've heard the expression, "Have I got a bridge to sell you!" Supposedly, it was started because of this bridge...when a grifter conned someone into believing that the bridge could be sold. Looking North from the bridge, you can see Midtown in the distance. The Empire State Building is about 2 miles away. To the South, Pier 17 and the South Street Seaport are below at the base of lower Manhattan's financial district. Also, from Pier 1 at the Fulton Ferry Landing, you can have a beautiful view of the bridge and downtown Manhattan. Both bicyclists and pedestrians are free to use the wooden walkway on the bridge, which is elevated above the traffic below.
5. South Street Seaport :: Here you’ll find cobblestone streets, with a maritime feel. This area will take you back to the 1800’s when New York was considered a Port town. You can board many of the magnificent boats, and walk along Pier 17, and enjoy the restaurants and shops in the 3-story Pavilion. There are street performers known as “buskers”…jugglers, magicians, and bands to entertain you! At the end of Pier 17, you will see a great view of the Brooklyn Bridge!
6. Washington Square Park :: Modeled from the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, the Arc in Washington Square Park is a hub for politics, culture and entertainment. The movie, “I Am Legend”, featured Will Smith living across the street from the park, and at one time, Presidential candidate, Barack Obama held a rally in 2007 at the park, with over 20,000 people in attendance. Here you can hang out with chess and scrabble players.
7. Statue of Liberty :: Besides the flag, it is America's most famous symbol for freedom - an icon for the immigrant. Castle Clinton is located on the tip of Battery Park in Manhattan, and this is where you begin your trip to the Statue of Liberty. The castle serves as the information center for the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island ferry rides. While you wait to board the ferry, you are entertained by acrobats, who help pass the time. When you debark the ferry at Liberty Island, you will see the image that you’ve seen in history books, on TV, and in movies. To get to the top, you must take a corkscrew double staircase, and once you reach the end of the spiral staircase, you will see fantastic views of Manhattan!
8. Intrepid Air & Space Museum :: The 900 foot long aircraft carrier is docked at Pier 86 in the Hudson River. The decommissioned aircraft carrier is a symbol of America's proud military history. The flight deck of the Intrepid is one the most exciting features, where you will see fighter planes, rescue helicopters, and planes lined up as if they’re ready for take off! As a former active duty Air Force girl for 6 years, and having grown up as an Air Force “military brat”, I enjoy this place, not to mention that the photographic opportunities here would definitely be a break from the norm!
9. Top of the Rock | Rockefeller Center :: Named after the multi-millionaire, John D. Rockefeller, the building spans 70-stories tall. Rockefeller Center covers 11 acres in midtown Manhattan. 30 Rockefeller Plaza is the centerpiece, and probably the best known building. From the “Top of the Rock”, the view is overwhelming. Unobstructed for 360 degree views from the 70th floor, the breathtaking landscape stretches for miles in every direction from Central Park, to the Chrysler Building, to Times Square, to the Hudson River, the East River, the Brooklyn Bridge, and the Statue of Liberty!
10. Canal Street :: Canal Street is flooded with street vendors, as well as storefronts, where tourists and New Yorkers alike barter for the best deals. Canal Street lies in the middle of several well-known landmarks: North of SoHo, South of Wall Street, East of the Manhattan Bridge, and West of the Holland Tunnel, which leads to New Jersey. If you want edgy backdrops using the rawness of the area, then this area is great for that!
11. Chinatown :: Some tourists visit the Eastside of NYC, but others want to see the “Far East” side. The Chinese population makes up about 30% of New Yorkers. If you love ethnic enclaves, along with a unique atmosphere, then Chinatown is for you! One of the unique attractions is the statue of Confucius, which stands before Confucius Plaza.
12. Lincoln Center :: Located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, between West 62nd and 65th Streets, and Columbus and Amsterdam Avenues, this location is fantastic because of the numerous locales within the center, such as Charles Benenson Grove, Hearst Plaza, Josie Robertson Plaza, the Grand Stairs, which light up, the Charles H. Revson Fountain, and the amazing architecture.
13. Empire State Building :: This iconic building is New York City’s most famous fixture, rising 1,453 feet in the air. As the tallest skyscraper in NYC, it has starred in over 90 movies. The spectacular view is revealed when you step outside onto the wrap-around terrace of the 86th floor. At night, its lights are a beacon for planes, and the beacon also changes colors to reflect the time of year.
Locations which embrace elements such bridges, exposed brick, graffiti, flowers,
water, and old architecture make great backdrops for photos.
If you would like to book an E-Session…or just want to have a fun, yet romantic session with the love of your life, then please reach out to me! Of course, you may always choose an alternate location, if the above don’t appeal to you. But, rather than remain in one location, I like to meander throughout NYC, taking advantage of all that the City has to offer by utilizing various locations. If you have the time, it's a great way to capture the excitiement of New York!
Do you have a great location for an E-Session, please leave a comment, and let me know!

THE EVOLUTION OF WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY
Did you know that wedding photography began sometime around the early 1800's? Back then, there were no paper photographs as we know today...but rather an image produced onto a light-sensitive silver or silver-coated plate.
In the early 19th century, couples would pose for a formal photograph in their "best" clothes before or after their wedding day. It was wasn't until the 1860's that couples began posing in their formal wedding attire on their wedding day. As wedding photography continued to evolve, photographers began to include the wedding party in the formal photos with the Bride and Groom in the 1880's.
[Photo of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1854 - credit: http://www.flickr.com/photos/britishmonarchy/4681561151 ]
In the beginning of the 20th century, color photography began to make its debut. However, colors would fade in a short period of time; thereby erasing any image memories. Because of this, wedding photos were predominantly in black and white. In the 1930's, with the evolution of photography equipment, processes, and techniques, wedding photography began to rise in popularity. This was just in time to embrace the marriage boom after World War II, when wedding photography increased, as troops returned from war.
In the 1970's, the introduction of wedding photojournalism evolved, where photographers began capturing images of the wedding as it unfolded, in a documentary style.
So, as you plan your wedding, think about how fortunate you are to have so many options available to relive your memories for years to come. I hope you found this tidbit of history interesting.

ARE YOU ENGAGED?
Some couples feel it's unnecessary, since they've had friends or family take snapshots of them over time, or they've taken snapshots of one another during the relationship. However, snapshots don't count when it comes to spending one of the most important days of your life with a professional photographer...so why not feel confident in their abilities?
A professional photographer is experienced, and poised, to capture the best images of you on your special day, and photography is an area of your wedding budget that should not be skimped on. For this reason, I encourage my clients to have an Engagement Session to overcome any anxiety and nervousness they may have. Additionally, I encourage this Session so the couple can become familiar with my photography style, and to put the couple at ease, and show them that having a professional session can be a fun experience. Furthermore, as their photographer, I am no longer a "stranger", showing up on their wedding day, but rather someone with whom they've established a rapport, and the couple can then feel confident that I will capture the best images of their love story.
For the couple, the Engagement Session serves a multi purpose. Besides receiving worthwhile camera practice, you will understand how your photographer shoots, and your photographer will learn more about your personalities, what makes you comfortable, and your likes/dislikes. In addition, your photographer gains valuable insight about preferences for your wedding day. I always inform my clients that their faces are part of the canvas; therefore, any emotions will come through in the picture. Because of this, the more comfortable you are, the better your photographs will be.
Once the Engagement Session is set, it's time to think about the location. I encourage outdoor locations, since couples tend to feel less restricted, and their personalities can evolve naturally, moreso than in an enclosed indoor space. I also suggest that the location be a venue that holds special meaning, which will also put the couple at ease, since it's familiar, thus evoking natural interactions. Typical locations are: where the proposal took place; the first date; favorite park, hiking trail, beach, etc. Some couples ask for my suggestions, and I am happy to provide them with various locations where I've photographed previously, based on what the couple is looking for, such as landscape or city setting.
When it comes to attire, I inform my clients that your photographs should be timeless and classy. Therefore, it is not recommended that you wear bold prints or shirts with logos. For outdoor locations, typically khaki, white, or monochromatic tones are best, and will not distract from the couple, or the beauty of the location.
After your Session is completed, what do you do with your photos? There are multiple uses, such as Save The Dates; portrait for your home; gifts to family/friends for upcoming holidays, or birthdays; photo montage, and a large matted Signature Board, which can be displayed at the reception for your guests to sign, rather than the typical guest book.
On your wedding day, you want to look your best, so shouldn't you feel your best about having your photographs taken? An Engagement Session can be enlightening, liberating and fun!
Do you have a creative suggestion for an Engagement Session? Please leave a comment and let me know!

FUNERAL HOMES ARE NOW HOSTING WEDDINGS
Paulita Flores took her wedding vows in December, in an elegant rotunda with marble floors amid glimmering chandeliers and a bubbling fountain.
It didn't bother her that a room down the hall showcased caskets and urns. Or that the building was surrounded by a large cemetery with 100,000 gravestones on 60 acres. Or that on other days, the facility hosts something a lot more somber — funerals.
Across the USA, funeral homes are building and marketing such centers as not just a place to mourn the dead, but as sites for events celebrating the living, including weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, holiday parties and proms.
The lure? It is often less expensive; there is greater availability; and the settings — inside and outside — can be nothing short of wedding-picture perfect.
James Olson, who is also a spokesman for the National Funeral Directors Association, says he has noticed more couples tying the knot in funeral homes, but not only because of changes in his industry. "A lot of [traditional wedding facilities] are shutting down because of the economy, while we [funeral homes] aren't going anywhere."
Although people may think it morbid to start a marriage in a place surrounded by sadness, it would be no different than doing it at a church — where both caskets and newlyweds occupy the aisles throughout the year, says Sue Totterdale, national chairwoman of the National Association of Wedding Professionals. "A banquet hall is a banquet hall, and a chapel is a chapel," she says. "If you can get past the driveway and the cemetery, it's going to be beautiful."
So, what are your thoughts? Would you consider having your wedding or event at a funeral home? Leave your comments and let me know.

WELCOME TO 2011!!!
Hello Blog Family and Happy New Year!!! Well, 2010 was definitely a ride, but it's out with the past, and in with the new, challenging, and exciting 2011!!!
This year I plan to blog more regularly, and provide not only photographs of my clients, but also more tips, and suggested vendors, whose products I feel may be useful to you...especially wedding vendors.
One such vendor that I discovered is, Lila Frances. This wonderful idea was born by owner Anna Hartshorn, of Nashville, TN. Anna offers creative alternatives to those "ugly" hangers! Ladies...as a photographer, I don't know how many times I've gone to shoot the wedding gown on a hanger, and the hanger is, for lack of a better term...ugly!
Brides-to-be...the most beautiful gown that you'll probably ever wear in your life...WHY would you choose to display it on an ordinary wire or plastic hanger?! Think about it! Well, Lila Frances has beautiful, one-of-a-kind hangers for this specific purpose. Your hanger can be personalized with both your name and your husband-to-be, or choose from a heart, or whatever you like. The pricing is affordable, and 10% of all profits are donated to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund, which is near and dear to Anna's heart.
Take a look: http://www.etsy.com/people/lilafrances#. I think these hangers are fun, and definitely provide the unique personality that your wedding day should exude!
Also, this year, I ask that when reading my blog, please leave your comments and let me know whether you find my tips, or suggested vendors helpful! Also, follow my blog, by clicking the link at the bottom of the column to your right.

HOW UNIQUE DO YOU WANT TO BE ON YOUR WEDDING DAY?
Well, brides are having very different ideas of their wedding these days. It’s no longer about just staying with tradition. Each wedding should be as unique as the bride herself!
As a professional photographer who specializes in weddings, I do watch some TV shows that feature brides. Recently, I watched a show on TLC, “Four Weddings”, which features four brides who attend one another’s wedding, and each score the other’s wedding day, and the bride with the highest score wins an all expenses paid honeymoon.
There were a couple of brides from two different episodes, which caught my attention because they had a very different vision for their special day.
Bride Keshia :: Keshia wanted to honor her Mother who had passed away, by wearing an aqua wedding gown, which was her Mother’s favorite color. Since the bride wore Aqua, her bridesmaids wore white, which came as a surprise to her guests, who were not told in advance of this unique change, which was Keshia’s intent…for her guests to be surprised!
Furthermore, Keshia held her reception at a VERY early hour…7:00 a.m.! You know you have to really love the bride to attend a reception at that hour! Whew…I don’t know if I could’ve made it…I’m not a morning person. LOL! Another unique twist was that the guests were served a breakfast buffet FIRST, before the ceremony. There were also pre-ceremony toasts by the parents.
The ceremony was held outdoors on the rooftop of the venue, which offered a gorgeous view of the Miami oceanfront. After the ceremony, guests were treated to a second reception, which included the traditional fare of cake cutting and dancing. Below is Keshia's aqua wedding gown. I apologize for the quality of the photo; however, it is a screenshot from online:
Bride Kati :: A 39-year old bride who married an older man. Because they were an “older” couple, and it was Kati’s second wedding, she didn’t want the traditional “frilly” reception with the bouquet/garter toss, so she elected to do things her way. Kati is an outdoorsy athlete, so the couple opted for a non-traditional outdoor barbeque reception. There were actually individuals hired to cook on barbeque grills during the reception, and there was a buffet style dinner of BBQ “sides” for guests to enjoy.
Although Kati wore a beautiful, white form-fitting wedding gown, the guests were asked to dress very casual…with some guests arriving in jeans, shorts, and even flip-flops. The signs leading to the reception were comprised of wood, stacked atop each other to reflect old wooden street signs, kind of like you may find at an amusement park, and each sign indicated the city and mileage traveled of the guests attending their wedding!
Although the guests were casually dressed, Kati still wanted an air of sophistication about her reception, so the festivities were held under an outdoor tent, which included a rolled cigar station, and a bagpiper! Below is a better quality photo of Kati, also taken from online:
In the end, the wedding day should be about the couple, and how they want their love to be represented. I admire brides who decide to go against the norm, and incorporate their true personalities into their wedding day!
Ciao, until next time…

HOW MUCH WOULD YOU PAY FOR GREAT SERVICE?
So…you’re engaged! What’s the next step? Plan your wedding budget. This may seem like a minimal task; however, take the time to really think about what you expect vendors to provide, which may save you disappointment in the long run. It’s so easy to get caught up in trying to have “the wedding of your dreams”; however, the reality is that today, 4 out of 5 couples pay for the majority of their weddings .
When planning your budget, be realistic, and do your research. The old adage, “you get what you pay for”, can apply in many cases. You should decide what aspects of the wedding are most important to you, and place your dollar emphasis in those areas.
As a professional photographer, I place some emphasis on photography…since that is the final documentation of your special day…so, why would you leave it in the hands of an amateur? You wouldn’t take your car to a non-reputable location for repair, nor would you choose a doctor with malpractice suits. Therefore, keep this in mind when choosing your photographer.
I always say that anyone can take a picture, but only an experienced professional can create art. Don’t believe the hype when it comes to hiring just “anyone” to photograph your wedding. Weddings are the most difficult genre of photography to master. This is based on the ever-changing lighting situations, varying skin tones of the subjects, the fast pace, and the photographer's general knowledge of obtaining the opportune shots, which changes constantly, and is due in part to the faith-base of the wedding. A decent camera does not guarantee a great picture. However, professionals are adept in adjusting to various situations quickly, and carry backup equipment!
On average, couples in the U.S. spend about $19,600 on their weddings. However, the majority of couples spend from $14,000 to $24,000. This cost does not include the engagement ring or honeymoon.
Couples in White Plains, NY where I am located average between $26,000 and $43,000 for their weddings. Of this cost, $2,400 to $4,000 is spent on Photography & Videography, which is within the standard…10% of the wedding budget. High-end photographers can charge $10,000+.
The New York average for photography/videography is from $2900 to $4800. This is based on the spending trends of brides and grooms, not vendor pricing.
This is an overwhelming time in many ways. But, keeping an open mind when meeting with photographers may help. Sometimes, it's not always about the cost. In my opinion, EXPERIENCE can warrant the price. If you love a photographer's work, as with an type of customer service, you will be more likely to pay the required fees. If you have a specific budget that you must maintain, simply use that as your gauge...then choose a photographer within your price point, whom you feel embraces your vision and needs.
Another suggestion: choose a photographer that you LIKE, and one that exudes the personality that you desire. After all, you will be with your photographer for the duration of your wedding day, so it makes sense to feel confident in your choice.
Experience and customer reviews can also assist with your decision-making. And finally, it doesn’t hurt to ask for references!
Ciao, until next time...
